On the 21 February 1927 Leicester Cathedral was hallowed in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury Randall Thomas Davidson.
There has been a building of worship on the site since before the Romans. Ox bones were found on the site during excavations which could indicate Pagan worship. St.Martins originally known as St.Crosse is mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086, but the present structure (apart from a few alterations) probably dates from the reign of the first Plantagenet King - Henry II.
Now of course, it is the final resting place of the last Plantagenet King - Richard III. There are about 900 bodies buried in the church itself including the father of the famous - heaviest man in Britain - Daniel Lambert.
